The Praying Mantis: Character Study

The Praying Mantis: Character Study

Take a look at this cool character designed by 2D/3D artist, Thomas Jordan Wanless. We are pleased that more and more digital artists from around the world are experimenting with a diverse range of characters. Enjoy

“A hunter of the San Bushmen tribe. According to superstition, a praying mantis is a sign of fortune (or misfortune) in hunting. In some traditions, a mantis is placed on a newborn’s forehead to grant it good luck in hunting when it reaches adulthood. However, bad luck will befall a person if they step on a praying mantis, rendering their hunting expeditions bounty-less.”
This was an interesting challenge for me, because I’ve never designed a character based on African culture. I haven’t studied painting black skin before either, so it was good practice studying the tones and colours for black skin.
