The world of art has always been a space for self-expression and the celebration of individuality. For Aislinn Finnegan, a Northern-Irish/Zambian illustrator living in London, this is especially true. With a passion for art and a determination to challenge societal norms, Finnegan has made waves in the art world with her bold and thought-provoking illustrations.
Born in Northern-Ireland to a Zambian mother and an Irish father, Finnegan has always been aware of her multicultural background. Growing up, she was exposed to different cultures, traditions, and ways of life, which greatly influenced her art and perspective on the world. This unique blend of cultures is reflected in her work, which celebrates diversity and challenges the lack of representation in the art world.
Finnegan’s journey in the world of art began with her studies in Textiles in Practice at MMU from 2015-2018. However, she soon realized that her true passion lay in illustration and digital art. “I have always been an avid drawer, and I felt that through illustration, I could express myself best,” she says. This realization led her to pursue a Master’s in History of Art with an African specialization, which she is currently finishing up.
Finnegan’s work is a beautiful fusion of her love for art and her African roots. She uses an Afrofuturistic lens in her illustrations, which places Black womxn at the forefront and center. This allows her to explore and celebrate Blackness in all its forms, using various aesthetics and styles to create unique and individualized portraits. “I want to create a space where Black womxn can see themselves represented in a positive and empowering way,” she shares.
Through her art, Finnegan delves headfirst into topics of race, identity, and femininity. She uses her platform to combat the lack of representation and the imposing of stereotypes of Black womxn in the media and within the art world. “As a Black womxn, I have personally experienced the effects of underrepresentation and stereotypes, and I want to use my art to challenge and change that,” she says.
Finnegan’s illustrations are a powerful commentary on society’s narrow beauty standards and the need for diversity and inclusivity in the art world. Her use of vibrant colors, intricate details, and bold imagery draws the viewer in and sparks important conversations about race, identity, and representation.
In addition to her illustrations, Finnegan also runs workshops and talks to promote diversity and inclusivity in the art world. She believes that education and open discussions are essential in bringing about change in the industry. “I want to create a safe space for Black womxn to express themselves and their creativity,” she says.
Aislinn Finnegan is a shining example of how art can be used to challenge societal norms and promote positive change. Her unique background, passion for art, and dedication to representation and inclusivity make her a force to be reckoned with in the art world. As she continues to create thought-provoking and empowering illustrations, she is breaking barriers and inspiring others to do the same.
